Significance of Surah Al-Fateeha

Surah Fatiha is the opening chapter of The Holy Quran; it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) in the early days of His stay in Mecca Mukarrama. Once, an Angel asked The Prophet about the importance of this Surah, and The Prophet replied, “There are two lights from the heaven one is Surah Fatiha and other is Surah Baqarah.”

Foundation of the Holy Quran

As the first complete revelation received by Prophet Muhammad, Surah Fatiha introduces fundamental principles of The Quran, praises the infinite blessings of Allah(s.w.t), His limitless Mercy, and His guidance for human beings.
There is a Hadith which portrays the importance of this Surah narrated as,” By the One, in Whose hand is my soul, Allah has not sent down a similar Surah to this Surah (Al-Fatihah), neither in the Turah, nor in the Gospel, nor in the Psalms, nor even in the Qur’an and it is Umm-ul-Kitab.”

Al-Fatiha: The honor of the Prophet

Through this Surah, The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was granted access to a deeper understanding of the Divine, establishing a profound connection with the Lord. This Surah holds great significance compared to others, as it was the first Surah of The Quran that was revealed completely.

A girl came to us and said: “The chief of this tribe has been stung by a scorpion, and our men are not present, is there anybody amongst you who can recite something upon him to treat him?” Then, one of our men went along with her, although we did not think he knew such treatment.

However, our friend went to the chief and recited something upon him, and the chief was cured. The chief gave him thirty sheep and gave us all milk to drink. When he returned, we asked our friend: “Did you know anything to recite upon him to cure him?” He said: “No, I only recited Umm al-Kitab (i.e. Surah al-Fatiha) upon him.”

We said we should only do something once we reach Madinah and ask the Prophet about this (practice and reward- whether the sheep were lawful or not for us). Upon reaching Madinah, we narrated this to the Prophet (P.B.U.H.), and he remarked: “How did he come to know that Al-Fatiha can be used as a cure? (P.B.U.H.) Distribute your reward amongst yourselves and a lot a share for me as well”.” (Sahih Bukhari)
